Avicenna on the Winter Regime

Avicenna on the Winter Regime

“…Winter. There should be plenty of physical work. Eat liberally, if the prevailing wind is northerly. If southerly, increase the exercise but diminish the amount of food. Diet: The bread should be made heavier in winter than in summer. The same applies to flesh-meat, roasted meat, and the like. Pot-herbs: take cabbage, beet, celery. Avoid … red barley, purslane, endive. …When the body is healthy, illnesses are unlikely to come on during the winter. Should they do so, however, the appropriate treatment should be used, including purgation if that is necessary. Illness will only arise under strong provocation, the agents being usually of a " hot " quality…”

Overprescribing, Polypharmacy and Deprescribing

Overprescribing, Polypharmacy and Deprescribing

Overprescribing and polypharmacy” (if four or more medications are prescribed), can be the result of a combination of prescribed medications, over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements and is especially prevalent in older sections of the population.

Deprescribing is part of a process of reviewing the risk-benefit of medications.

According to Eureka, a November 2019 study by the American Geriatrics Society said, “Geriatricians, general internists, and cardiologists frequently consider deprescribing cardiovascular medications. They noted that successfully implementing patient-centric deprescribing will require improved communication between all physicians and their patients…We hope our study will contribute to advancing deprescribing as a patient-centered strategy that can improve the safety of medication prescribing practice and improve the wellbeing of older adults,"

Bedtime Snacks

Bedtime Snacks

An August 2019 study of women weight trainers, by Florida State University said,

  • “For far too long, people have been led to believe that eating before bed causes metabolic disturbances and will make them gain fat … However, the data simply does not support this when the food we choose to eat before bed is protein-based and small in size."

  • "In women who weight train, there are no differences in overnight local belly fat metabolism or whole-body fat burn whether you eat protein in the form of a protein shake during the day post-workout or at night presleep,"

  • "So, essentially, you can eat protein before bed and not disturb fat metabolism."

  • "There are such bad misconceptions about eating at night, that it will 'make me gain weight' or 'slow my metabolism,' …The research suggests that really only holds true if you're eating a ton of calories and they are carbohydrate- and/or fat-laden. There are so many potential beneficial effects of eating protein at night, and it will be extremely important to take all of this science to the community to try to change the outlook of these dietary habits."

Diabetes Remission Through Weight Loss

Diabetes Remission Through Weight Loss

A September 2019 study by the University of Cambridge said, “We've known for some time now that it's possible to send diabetes into remission using fairly drastic measures such as intensive weight loss programmes and extreme calorie restriction," .Dr Hajira Dambha-Miller also said, “These interventions can be very challenging to individuals and difficult to achieve. But, our results suggest that it may be possible to get rid of diabetes, for at least five years, with a more modest weight loss of 10%. This will be more motivating and hence more achievable for many people."

Professor Simon Griffin added: "This reinforces the importance of managing one's weight, which can be achieved through changes in diet and increasing physical activity. Type 2 diabetes, while a chronic disease, can lead to significant complications, but as our study shows, can be controlled and even reversed."

Avicenna on the Autumn Regime

Avicenna on the Autumn Regime

“…Autumn ; the season when the weather is changeable and unsettled. [Autumn engenders bad humours, bilious and sanguineous (Rhazes).] A more liberal regimen is here needed, if health is to be preserved. Avoid: desiccant agents; sexual intercourse; drinking much cold water; cold shower baths ; sleeping in a cold place (cold enough to excite gooseflesh) ; retiring to sleep on a full stomach. It is advisable to protect oneself from the midday heat and the early morning cold breezes. Fruits are to be avoided, or at least taken only in small quantity [they supply bad chyme, and engender flatulencies (even figs and grapes do this) unless taken before food]. In bathing, only tepid water may be used. [Exercise should be moderate.] During the time of the autumnal equinoxes, evacuations should be procured in order to ensure that the excrementitious particles shall not be held back in the system all winter. Although for some persons it is better to see that the humours are kept "on the move," it is usually best they should keep in repose. As the age advances, emesis must no longer be procured in autumn lest fever should be encouraged to develop.”
