Plethora - Hypertension

Plethora - Hypertension

Ibn Sina in his Canon said,

“Speaking in general the signs of plethora of the first type are :

Objective : red face ; full veins ; tightness of skin ; sluggish movements (gestures) ; full pulse. High-coloured urine ; dense urine ; scanty appetite.

Subjective : sense of weight in the limbs ; weak vision ; dreams in which there is a sense of weight—as when one dreams one is unable to move, or is carrying a heavy weight, or cannot give utterance to words. This kind of dream may be compared with that associated with attenuation of humours, or where the humours are moderate in amount for here one dreams one is flying through the air, or moving at a great spee

The translator’s note is: “The modern term " hypertension" is covered by the old term of plethora or repletion. The correspondence is verified by some of its symptoms. Thus, hemorrhagic phenomena occur—in the nose, retina, cerebrum, meninges, labyrinth, the skin ; and as hematuria and hsemetemesis simulating organic disease. Hypertension causes fatigue of the heart shown by : dyspnoea, palpitation, quick pulse, anginal attacks, nocturnal pseudo-asthma, bruit de galop.”

Greater Celandine about which Wikipedia advises “… this herb has been recognized as a useful detoxifying agent … it was also once used to treat liver disorders, owing to the juice's resemblance to bile.”

In Chinese Medicine it is known as Bai Qu Cai and classified as a bitter, pungent, slightly warm herb.

Covid-19 – Unani Tibb Theory

Covid-19 – Unani Tibb Theory

A 28 March 2020 post by Hakim M. Salim Khan M.D. (M.A.) M.H. F.G.N.I. D.O. Principal of the College of Medicine and Healing Arts on his website said,

“We often hear on the news and through the health services that the most vulnerable people to Covid-19 are, for example:

  1. Those with heart diseases.

  2. Those with lung and respiratory diseases.

  3. Those with weak/compromised immune systems.

  4. The elderly.

Congruent with this, Unani Tibb: Whole-Person Healthcare and Medicine can provide further insight using the time-tested wisdom-based understanding of the four temperaments.

Each person is assessed according to their own unique, individual combination of energetic qualities (the above diagram shows each category of temperament, the season it corresponds to, and its energetic qualities.)

According to this understanding, flu-like symptoms are usually the result of a temperamentally cold condition.  This means that those with Phlegmatic (winter) and Melancholic (autumn) temperaments need to take extra care when it comes to diseases of this nature.”

Mitochondria in the Bloodstream

Mitochondria in the Bloodstream

A January 2020 study by the Institut National De la Sante Et De La Reserche Medicale has found a new component in blood: mitochondria. The researchers said,

"When we consider the sheer number of extracellular mitochondria found in the blood, we have to ask why such a discovery had not been made before …Our team has built up expertise in the specific and sensitive detection of DNA in the blood, by working on the fragmentation of extracellular DNA derived from the mitochondria in particular …The extracellular mitochondria could perform various tasks as messenger for the entire body"

This new knowledge opens up areas of research for treatment options in relation to inflammation, for example and biomarkers in non-invasive prenatal diagnosis and cancer.

Avicenna Quoting Galen on Taking the Pulse

Avicenna Quoting Galen on Taking the Pulse

I use the Chinese Medicine System of pulse diagnosis.  There are three pulses on the right hand and three on the left hand.

Pulse diagnosis is the “Gold Standard” of diagnostic tools.

Avicenna, the father of Western Medicine, acknowledged the expertise of the Chinese Medicine system of pulse taking.  And, quoted Galen as saying, "For many years I was doubtful about clearly discerning the movement of contraction by touch, and I shelved, the question until such time as I should learn enough to fill the gap in my knowledge. After that, the doors of the pulse were opened to me. Whoever should study these things as I did will perceive that which I perceived [as it were, a brilliant light shining suddenly out from behind total darkness. Whoever allows these words to be true and not fabulous will benefit very greatly; despair will not touch him or frighten him from the pursuit of his study, even though he makes no progress for many years."]
